Where's the Beef: Delaware

So begins our ambitious (perhaps too much so) 50-part series called Where's the Beef, America?, in which we present a list of what appear to be the top burgers in each of this fine nation's great states. We say "appear" because we're simply doing some research on the Web, gathering entries from blogs and trolling through posts on Chowhound, eGullet, and RoadFood.com. We'll throw the beef at the wall, and if what sticks turns out to be bullshit, call us on it, especially if you live in the featured state. Leave your thoughts in the Comments section. — Ed.

WTB_Delaware.jpgDelaware. The First State. So called because it was the first state to sign on to the Constitution. That was on this very date, December 7, way back in 1787.

Perhaps Delaware's representatives were visionaries, able to see the greatness that would eventually flow from the charter they were autographing. Or maybe they just envisioned a time down the road when their decendents would reap the benefits of "the most advanced and flexible business formation statute in the nation," i.e., credit card companies can rip you off there more easily than anywhere east of South Dakota.

But we digress. For all their apparent vision back in the day, we were hard-pressed to find much in the way of burgerdom in today's Delaware. But it's a small state, so we're sure there's more out there than the following two places:

JAKE'S HAMBURGERS | Newark, New Castle, Kirkwood Highway, Dover
20051207JakesNewark.jpgFounded in Newark, Delaware, in 1991, Jake's is known for its fresh–never frozen burgers and its shakes (Jake's make malts as well). Holly Moore of Holly Eats gives it 4 Grease Stains out of a possible 5, reporting that "the hamburgers are loose-packed and grilled." In the photo on Holly's Jake's page, the looseness of the grind is evident. Looks delicious.

A Delaware-native coworker of mine had this to say:

It started out as this little hole in the wall (which is still there), and it has outdoor dining. But it's funny because the outdoor seating area is right next to a four-lane highway. So you're sitting there eating, and all these cars are whizzing by. But people do it—'cause it's that good.

It's also apparently good enough to franchise, as there are now three other Jake's in Delaware and one in Maryland. (Click here for Jake's locations)

THE CHARCOAL PIT | Wilmington
The Charcoal Pit turns up on Rob Brooks-Bilson's Foo(d) Bar, where he describes it as

... a hamburger joint that's been in operation since the 1950's. Although often touted as Delaware's best burger, I love the place more for its atmosphere and nostalgia. From the 1950's Jetson's architecture to the individual jukeboxes at each table, the place makes you feel like a member of the Cunningham family. Several generations of Delawareans have grown up with The Pit It serves many purposes for many people. A memorable destination for a child, a high school hangout, a meeting place, or simply a place for an inexpensive meal.

That's atmosphere, though. How's the burger? Joe H., a poster on Chowhound, says:

The Charcoal Pit cooks the 1/2 pound fresh ground chuck burger over, obviously, charcoal on a good bun. With your first bite the juice will spurt out in your mouth! Order it medium rare, they will ask, and don't have much more than cheese and maybe pickle and onion. They've won the title of best hamburger in the Delaware Valley (Wilmington plus surrounding area) for decades and I honestly believe it competes with Kincaid's Grocery in Fort Worth for the title of America's best.

Them's pretty strong words. How 'bout a second opinion? This one, from RoadFood.com:

The classic cheeseburger had that unique chargrilled taste that you rarely find anymore, even in places that grill their burgers over fire. The cooks will grill to your specifications, so the adventurous can still get some red in their burgers. We ordered ours medium and it arrived with just the slightest touch of pink; the perfect balance to bring out the meatiness of the burger. Your waitress will dress the burger from a condiment station and tear the lettuce from whole heads of crisp iceberg.

So, Delawarians: What's the word? Do these places stack up? Are the reviewers on target or in the crapper? Let us know. Comment away!

Next time I am through Del I will look up a few of theses place, nothing like a good burger.

So glad to see the Pit getting some recognition! Yes, the place is an institution, but it still exists due to the quality of the food. The burgers are the best I've had ANYWHERE, and better yet, the fries are perfect too. Go for the gusto and have a black and white malted (served in the shiny metal cup) and it's heaven. The line is out the door day and night for a reason.

(There are other Charcoal Pits in Delaware, but the real one is located on Rt. 202, about 1 mile off of I-95).

The Pit and Jakes are definitely my two favorite burger places in DE. That said, I heard the new Five Guys on 202 is also very good, although I haven't eaten there yet. Maybe in June when I'm back in town.

The Charcoal Pit, albeit a Delaware institution, is highly over rated; mostly a hangout for highschool kids and seniors who come to eat the cheap food and sundaes named after local schools. The patties are frozen and preformed like McDonald's AND not even cooked over charcoal as the name implies, but a gas fired grill. Jake's burgers are fantastic. I had one at their Kirkwood Highway location two days ago to see how it compares to my memory and it really impressed. I grew up in Delaware but now live in NYC and have been slowly working my way around the burger circuit here. Fans of Shake Shack style burgers would definitely enjoy Jake's, although the quality of ingredients and fries are better at the Shack. If you're traveling on I-95 through Delaware the Newark location is pretty easy to get to; only 5 minutes off the highway on Rt 273 across from the Saturn/Infinity dealerships.

Was in the area for the day and sought out Jake's in Newark, DE. Place was packed with many folks standing waiting for their orders. I went for the Big Jake, which turned out to be 3 patties instead of 2 patties. I frankly had thought it would be a larger diameter burger instead of just more meat. This did throw the burger/bread ratio somewhat out of whack. Ordered with everything - thankfully this did NOT include mayo or ketchup. Choice of raw or fried onions - chose raw of course.

Good flavor, very tender beef. It was cooked on a flat griddle and sort of had that greasy griddle flavor. Seasoned well, cooked well. I didn't hear anyone ask for their burger to be cooked any particular degree of doneness, and I wasn't asked, so not sure that's an option.

All in all a pretty good burger. Wouldn't go out of my way for it again.

Damn,
I was just in Newark, Delaware two days ago, and had No Burger leads. I gotta get these books.

Luckily, I have to go back.

I will go get a JAKE'S HAMBURGERS!

We also have 5 Guys and Red Robbin. Jake's has unbelievable Shakes. Mmmm-and the burgers are good, but I think 5 Guys may be a bit better. The Pit also has great tasting burgers-but it's been a while for me. My BF did get one two weeks ago and I had a bite-just as good as I remember.

My fave is Red Robbin though. Not to mention their fries are great. And I LOVE the Strawberry Lemonade.

Not burger joint, but people really do like Ruby Tuesday's burgers.

Thought I'd add this (not sure if they are everywhere or not): the grocery store by our house sells Bubba Burgers. I think the BF would commit suicide if he couldn't have the Jalepeno version whenever he wanted.
