I Might Lose My Editorship of AHT for This: The Fake-Bacon Veggie Cheeseburger on a Whole-Wheat Krispy Kreme Bun

Veggieburger, Soy Bacon, and Cheese on a Whole Wheat Krispy Kreme Doughnut

Veggieburger, Soy Bacon, and Cheese on a Whole Wheat Krispy Kreme DoughnutAs is common wisdom, one thing the Catholic church excels at is instilling guilt in those raised in the faith. However lapsed I may be these days, that guilt remains.

So, while I may not attend mass as often as I should, I always try to give up something for Lent. This year, I decided I'd go really hard on myself and give up red meat. That means ... yes ... NO BURGERS!

Anyway, all the blogging I've been doing lately here about the "Grizzlie Burger" (a bacon cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreme bun) gave me a hankerin' for one.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so I broke down and bought some Gardenburger patties, some Smart Bacon, some real cheddar cheese (I'm avoiding red meat, not dairy, after all).

To really go all out, I figured I'd use the new whole-wheat Krispy Kreme as my bun.

I whipped this thing up in the Serious Eats offices using the toaster oven and the hot plate we inherited from the previous tenants.

How did it taste?

How do you think?

I'm counting down the days till Easter.

I thought I was the only one foolish enough to give up burgers for Lent, and now, all I can think about is...BURGERS!!!! Can you change your Lenten penance in mid-Lent?

On March 21, I'll order two double Shack burgers and eat one in your honor.

how was the whole wheat KK donut, though? it actually sounds delicious to me (nothing to do with health value). im curious...care to share? or was its taste obscured by the fake-meat monstrosity inside?

They make a whole wheat donut!? I think that's just Krispy Kreme's way of pointing and laughing at you. Not just you though: everyone.

You can eat burgers on sundays in lent because the fast does not apply then.

Justin: Funny enough, but I just learned that last year. I think it's a bit of a cop out, though. ;)

It has to do with the whole God rested on the seventh day so we can too.

That sounds like the most disgusting thing I could have ever imagined. At times like these, I'm thankful I'm an atheist.

Have you given up alcohol, too? I have given up pasta, per usual. If that doesn't sound very stringent/traditional, keep in mind that I'm only half-Christian!

I have not given up alcohol. Then I couldn't take th wine at Communion. Heh. J/K. It's harder for me to give up the red meat than it is alcohol, since I drink only rarely these days. (I'm getting old.) Probably the hardest thing for me to give up, though, would be Flickr. Heh.
